Fashion: Rock Out With Your Crocs Out

What do Shia Lebouf, P. Diddy, Justin Bieber, Paul Rudd, Jared Leto and The Joker all have in common?

Ok I’ll give you a little more time on this…..

You ready for it?

They all wear Crocs.

These fellas are the uprising. The insurgency.

By wearing a shoe the world loves to hate they’re fighting the rule set that’s made people feel safe in their daily lives - by living in the fear of looking or being seen as different. These guys are giving the big middle finger to the crowd. I like their style and even more their attitude.

Us humans have an easy tendency to hate things. Hate on stuff we don’t understand and hate the ideas that we aren’t brave enough to think or do ourselves. Particularly true in fashion when some trends get slapped with a bad rap, without a breadcrumb of investigation to see if they’re guilty of committing any crimes.

I mean seriously rubber shoes being called the ‘contraceptive crocs’ is hilarious. Maybe they are indeed mans’ best contraceptive, but thanks to the A-listers above they’re helping people jump off the bandwagon and see through the cloud of unnecessary hate.

Look I’ll be the first to admit, I was a fully fledged hater of the Crocs up until I had my own personal experience with them. They’re easy to hate when you haven’t got the chance to get to know them. Ya I know almost sounds like a deep and insight life lesson is beginning.

But I’ve been on a journey of self growth, openness and welcoming fresh perspectives and sometimes it’s the small stuff that matters.

And well - what do you know - I’m currently sitting here writing this post wearing my first pair of Crocs. Aged 33. Old dog, new kicks.

Ok and I also need to confess the timing of this sudden friendship with Crocs is a tad suspicious. Since I’m literally weeks away from becoming a dad. Maybe deep down I’ve been longing for Crocs. Maybe it’s a right of passage as a new dad?

Did I forget I ordered the ‘new dad starter kit’ complete with cargo shorts, a bumbag, bowling shirt and Crocs?

Shit….I basically have all those things.

Not only are these killer Crocs comfy as heck, they’re designed for all sorts of terrain. You could be hitting the beach - no problem - the water just runs straight out the holes. Might you need to go to your ‘fancy dress’ work Christmas party? Slide into your Crocs and they’ll be the most instagrammed item of the night (like actually). Or perhaps you just want to nip down to the super? Great! Your Crocs are ready and waiting, like a dog wanting to go for walkies.

The potential to flaunt your own sense of style doesn’t just stop with just your choice of Croc colour. Oh no - wait there is more - you can even personalise your Crocs by picking out some Jibbitz. What the heck are Jibbitz you ask? I didn’t know either at first, but I got addicted to saying Jibbitz out loud. Fun right?

Described simply, they’re little charms you can plug into your Crocs to make you extra. Cool things like cacti, donuts and your favourite superhero characters.

If you’re stepping into beginners Croc territory like I have, it’s best to kick it in the safe zone by opting for the Classic Clog silhouette. My two personal favourite colours are the white pair, which give you the greatest degree of styling flex and these green ones which happen to vibe off the new iPhone 11 Pro forrest deep green.

Forget what the masses say is cool and follow your own definition of cool. That’s way cooler anyhow.

Want to give Crocs a roll, then do it. Still don’t vibe them? Then that’s totally fine too. Just respect those dudes that do and let them get on with being them, while you be you.

Here’s to the guys who step out in whatever they like, because it’s their own right.
